Famous venue, thank you notes and a hot show

Poets of the Fall – Batschkapp, Frankfurt; October 14th, 2013

On previous tours I had learned that a day off often brings out the best in Poets of the Fall, because they are just more relaxed after a good night’s sleep and a day without travel. Yet I could not imagine anything even close to the show in Freiburg. They proved me wrong – again! Frankfurt got an amazing show full of laughs and a crazy happy band. It did not beat my favorite show of the tour, but it did come close. 🙂

Most of our group met up at our hotel, had lunch and went to the venue, where we met with the others. After the previous show we had made plans to do something nice for the guys to show our appreciation and decided on paper signs with “Thank you” written in all the languages we could cover in our group. D. brought pens, I brought paper and we spent the waiting time drawing and writing signs. We made a few spare ones too and involved people who arrived after us. Apart from German and English we had Swiss German, Norwegian, Italian, Russian, Finnish and Icelandic (for me 😉 ). We agreed to hold them up once the full band was back on stage after the acoustic set.

When Nina picked us up for the meet and greet there was much laughter and a few comments about her instructions. “You can ask all the questions! You can do everything you want”  – are you sure about that? 😉 S., A. and E. took the chance to say goodbye to the Poets, since this was their last show before returning home. Since the venue is quite well known, we talked about all the people who had played there before them. I also hugged all the guys, thanking them for the great show in Freiburg. They agreed that it was pretty amazing. Marko asked if we liked ‘The Wind that shakes the Barley’ – oh yes!

The venue was nice, inside and out with a stage just the right size. There was a barrier, but it was close enough for the guys to stand on and reach out to us – so many opportunities and they used them too. 😀 Maybe it was the location, maybe it was the audience, maybe it was my own happiness to see them again or maybe the guys just had an especially good day, but the whole concert felt great from the beginning. Everyone’s mood seemed just great, as if the spirit of the last show had somehow been saved and carried along.

It turned out to be an amazing night full of laughs and good moments for our group. Early on, Marko leaned out to S., holding her hand and singing to her. Later, he stepped of stage and leaned on to G. to reach out for a baseball cap he had spotted a few rows back. We got a lot of attention from the others too. I particularly remember Ollie standing right in front of me, smiling. The guys were not only communicating with us a lot, they also had a lot of fun interacting with each other. They often stepped closer to watch each other play (and sometimes played each other’s instruments), they stuck out their tongues at each other and they hugged too. <3

The best part of the night might have been the acoustic set. It started with Marko alone, taking out his earpiece to hear us and himself better. He told us that it was his favorite part of the show, because “I get to come out here alone. It’s just me… and my sixpack.” He kept talking about all the things he does not eat or drink. With every other thing he also admitted “that’s a lie!” – it was just hilarious. He ended with “Anyway, I worked hard for my sixpack”, rubbing his belly. That lead to D. yelling “Well then show us!” and some other comments. I was laughing already, but totally lost it when Marko grabbed his earpiece and announced: “I’m putting my earplugs on. I’m hearing way too much… distortion.” The banter went on a little longer, before he treated us to ‘The Wind that shakes the Barley’ once again. <3 He called Ollie back to the stage for ‘Desire’. Afterwards Ollie left and Marko called out far Jaska. Rocking back and forth on the barstool he was sitting on he decided to get a rocking chair next time. “I have a great job, because I get to come up on stage, make people happy and a fool out of myself – who could ask for more?” We cheered for that one. Jaska randomly started playing Eric Clapton’s ‘Tears in Heaven’. Marko started singing then joked that it was a Guns ‘n’ Roses song and proceeded to sing the first lines Guns ‘n’ Roses – style. Together they played ‘Roses’, again with the rest of the band joining them one by one. It must have been as hot on stage as it was in front, because Jani was shirtless now.

Once the song ended, we held up our multi-lingual thank you notes. The guys smiled and Marko walked along front row, reading each one out loud. He did a good job with all the languages too, even with Swiss German. 😀 Other than that, I don’t remember much that happened during specific songs, but I do remember Jani whispering to Ollie at one point and both of them laughing – sometimes I really want to know what they are saying to each other. 😉 I remember Jaska singing (!) and Jani wearing the feather boa and later wrapping it around Marko’s neck. When Marko played Ollie’s guitar he didn’t only use his hands this time, but turned around and played it with his butt! 😀 It must have been during ‘Carnival of Rust’ when he tied a scarf over his eyes and sang blindfolded. During ‘Lift’ Captain played the keyboards on his knees again and Jani got on his knees in front of Ollie. 😀 The instrumental improvisation in the end went completely out of hand. The guys were on fire, they just would not stop playing. When Ollie played his solo, Jaska decided he needed cooling off, picked up a fan from the side of the stage and carried it over. Unfortunately he unplugged it in the process and it stopped running. 😀 It took him a little bit to realize that, the look on his face was priceless. He then plugged it in somewhere between Ollie’s gear and held it up to cool Ollie down for as long as he played. Funny!

When the concert was over we all agreed it had been awesome. Outside we spent some time chatting and grouphugged before some of us had to leave. The remaining people celebrated the show together with drinks in a pub near our hotel. It was a good way to say goodbye to those of our group who were leaving. :’)

Poets of the Fall Switzerland/Austria/Germany tour: 6 gigs down, 4 to go. Next stop: Munich

Diamonds in the Rough

Martin and James – FZW, Dortmund; October 13th, 2013

In the middle of the ongoing Poets of the Fall tour I used the one off night they had between four shows to go home – and see Martin and James in Dortmund. Sure, the timing could have been better, but I certainly was not going to miss a show in my city if there was a chance to attend it. With the new album out for a few weeks already, I felt rather unprepared when I realized I only knew the songs they had been playing in the past year. Oh well, a concert without a lot of singing along from me then.

There wasn’t that much sleep to be had on the train ride from Freiburg, but I hadn’t expected that and I would not have wanted to miss the night out with my friends on the previous day. The price you pay for touring. 😉 Upon arrival I met my friend A. at the train station and we went to my place for lunch. It got all quite hectic, because I had so many things to do before we left again, but we still managed to make it to the venue around 5 pm. N., S., J. and a few others were already waiting. The doors opened a little late, but getting to the front was easy. There were nowhere near as many people as last year.

Jim Kroft was supporting the guys once again and had brought Ben Barrit along to help. It’s funny how quickly some things change. It the beginning of last year’s Martin and James tour I had not enjoyed his music much and wished for 2011 support act Oh, Napoleon to be back. This year, I was very happy to hear Jamie would join them on the road once more. 🙂 Not only did they bring lovely music, they were in a good mood too and instantly put a smile on my face.

Last time I had seen Jim in May, he had a full band to back him, but things worked well with just him and Ben on guitars. They played a lot of new songs that have been written since heir last tour. I especially loved the beautiful ‘Diamonds in the Rough’, but also liked ‘Like a Human Heart’. These new songs were mixed with older ones, well known and not so well known ones. It made me especially happy that ‘Cracked Polaroid’ was on the setlist. The song was never released on any album, but is clearly a fan favorite. The entire set was awesome. I loved the energy coming from them. 🙂

Setlist (out of order and probably incorrect):

Dreaming to some purpose
The Jailer
Cracked Polaroid
Diamonds in the Rough
Like a Human heart
Blue Sky
Tell me (where to begin)
The Great Doomsday story
See how the darkness grows
I hope you know

While we were waiting for Martin and James A. and the others told me about their concert in Hannover the previous day. It had been full of technical difficulties that led to the guys playing most of the gig unplugged. From all I heard. it was much fun and quite a memorable concert. This night, however, everything went well, except for a few cellphones interfering with the equipment. Strangely, this only seems to happen at Martin and James concerts or at least I have never noticed that problem elsewhere.

They started with ‘Bloom’, a song I had often asked them to play in the past, but the request was usually ignored. Now it was finally part of the regular setlist and made me really happy. After such a good start, I knew I’d enjoy the rest of the night. The guys brought out the band for ‘Where I belong’ – Stuart on keyboards, Jürgen on drums and Mark on the bass. It was weird at first to see Martin and James only play guitars instead of half a drum kit in addition, but it was much better than I had expected. Everything was louder than at concerts where it’s only the two of them, yet there was a bit more variety as well.

I really could not do much singing along for the new songs, but enjoyed them anyway. The arrangements were a bit different from the CD versions, but not totally changed. The songs they had played previously to recording the album did not go back to their early form and were played in the CD version instead, most notably ‘Cynical Skin’. It was good, but I still prefer the rough, stripped down versions they often play when there is no band around. This whole overproduced stuff they put on their CDs is just not for me. I had fun though and it made me happy to finally see them live again.

It surprised me to find ‘Tides’ on the setlist – back when it was a single I had the feeling they were refusing to play it because it had not been their choice. However, I realized that it is actually a song I really like. 🙂 The setlist worked quite well overall, mixing songs from both albums. Anyone who had been hoping for new, unheard songs was disappointed though. Either they had not written anything since the last concerts that wasn’t on the album or they were not ready to share. 😉

They had a nice acoustic set in the middle though, with ‘You’re a window’ played completely unplugged. What had happened accidentally the previous day, became now part of the show and they even walked off the stage and into the audience to play. It was pretty awesome and unexpected. 😀 The difficulties of Hannover were mentioned a few times, especially as an Explanation for having to drink tea after all the strain that had put on their voices.

Overall it was a fun concert with a good audience that was willing to sing and clap along. When the main set ended with ‘Matilda’, everyone screamed for more and they came back for four more songs. After ‘Life’s a show’ they wanted to say goodbye, but we demanded more and they came back for one last encore of ‘Somebody’ – wow, that was nice. I do admit that I had a hard time to get into it at first, but I’m still glad I made it there. By the end of the night, Martin and James had managed to paint a big smile on my face.

After the gig we stayed and chatted, joked around with Jim, who tried to make everyone jump when they wanted to take pictures with him. I had a few words with the guys too and when I checked out the T-Shirts and realized I did not have enough Money with me, Ryan told me to take the shirt anyway and just pay it at the next concert, which would happen a week later in Hamburg. How nice of him. 🙂
