Music for a rainy day

Jaimi Faulkner – Subrosa, Dortmund; May 31st, 2012

Until this past Thursday, I had never been to the Subrosa, didn’t even know it existed. Yet after my friend A. had kept telling me about Jaimi Faulkner and I said “Well if only he played in Dortmund, I’d go and check him out”, what choice did I have? 😉 According to their website, it was supposed to start at 7:30 p.m., so I made my way to the venue directly after work and arrived at 6:30 – I was the first paying gues that night. when I sat down, I overheard the bandmembers talking, saying they’d start at 8 – dang, that was going to be a long wait.

The venue was nice with a small stage and interesting decoration. Not many people fit in tehre and by the time the concert was supposed to start it was nicely filled. Most of the people greeted Jaimi personally, he seems to have some loyal followers.

They started a bit after 8 with some bluesy numbers. I have no idea what the songs were called, but it was good, listenable music. Jaimi’s band consisted of Travis Constable (drums),  Jasper Leak (bass) and Jacinta Curuana (backing vocals). They were good and they looked like they were having fun. I enjoyed the music, but it didn’t blow me of my feet. Nice, but nothing more.

In-between singing, Jaimi talked a little about some of the songs. He also noted that he knew about 80% of the audience and wasn’t sure if that was a good thing. The atmosphere was very relaxed, the audience was good and enjoyed the show. Jaimi played some acoustic numbers that I liked better thn the full band stuff. I have no idea what any of the songs were called though.

After an hour they took a break and later came back for another hour of music. All in all it was an enjoyable concert and I liked it enough to buy Jaimi’s solo CD. Yet I don’t think he will end up on my list of people to see more often.
